Situated on the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the shores of the Mediterranean, Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain in both size and population. It is also the capital of Catalonia, 1 of the 17 Autonomous Communities that make up Spain.
Barcelona is unequivocally a Mediterranean city, not only because of its geographic location but also because of its history, tradition and cultural influences. It is today an important cultural centre and a major tourist destination with a rich cultural heritage. Particularly renowned are architectural works of Antoni Gaudi and Lluís Domènech i Montaner that have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as art of Miró and Picasso. Barcelona is a city where you can stroll through a wide variety of public parks and gardens. If time allows, visit the Parc de Collserola, a protected natural site covering a surface area of some 8,000 hectares, and the Parc de Montjuïc.
Fabulous architecture, brilliant Spanish cuisine, flamboyant culture and wonderful weather combined make Barcelona a truly magnificent city.
